  • Why can we say Rightline Gear Sport Car Top Carriers are 100% Waterproof?

Rightline Gear Sport Carriers are different because they feature the revolutionary SZIP waterproof zipper. That’s right, water cannot pass through the zipper; no zipper flap is necessary for extra protection. All seams of the carrier are welded watertight and Rightline Gear’s proprietary PVC Semi-Coated Mesh XT stands up to the elements for years to come. Other carriers may claim to be waterproof, but they do not have the features to back it up.

    Features

    SZIP Waterproof Zipper

While standard zippers may be mounted on fabric or have exposed zipper teeth, SZIP waterproof zippers have a protective, water-tight lip and welded seams to keep water out.

    PVC Semi-Coated Mesh XT

High velocities are no match for Sport Car Top Carriers, thanks to their heavy-duty, Xtra Tough PVC Semi-Coated Mesh XT construction.

    Stuff Sack

All of Rightline Gear's Sport Car Top Carriers come with a handy stuff sack so your carrier is always on hand when you need it, and easily stows away when you don't.

    Attachment Methods

    WITH a Roof Rack

Loop the included straps around the roof rack side rails or cross bars.

WITHOUT a Roof Rack - Car Clips

Start with the Car Clips on the (4) attachment straps. Open the vehicle's doors and hook the Car Clips under the door frame weather molding.

Causes leaks due to design and has durability issues

I have a 2016 Prius C that this bag was used on. We took a 1400 mile round trip to Myrtle Beach and back with the bag. During the trip I got 42 mpg but have no other comparable trips to determine the difference the bag made to gas milage. The Prius C is rated at 45 highway and I rarely get below that so I''d guess about a 3 mpg decrease is likely. I expected a larger impact so was surprised.

I used the pad that Rightline Gear sells to prevent damage to the roof of the car.

The bag smells like an inner tube and made all of our stuff temporarily smell the same but it quickly wore off our gear once it was out of the bag. It didn''t prove to be an issue.

The clips that hold the bag in place worked well but at first it sounded like the door was just slightly open at speeds greater than 40 mph. I assume this is from the weather striping being compressed and letting a tiny bit of air in as a result. It quickly became background noise and wasn''t terribly bothersome.

The same compression of the weather striping did become an issue on our drive back from the shore. During periods of heavy rain all four of the clips caused leaking water to get into the car and onto us. This might be remedied by putting some foam or universal weather striping on the back of the clip so the seal of the door isn''t compromised when compressed. I didn''t try this though since the bag didn''t hold up to its first trip.

The bag needs to be loaded with a bias toward the front of the car if not full. The first time I loaded the bag with most of the stuff toward the front of the car and had no trouble. Driving at 70+ mph there was no flapping of the bag. The second time I packed it more spread out the bag flapped loudly at 50 mph till I reloaded it with most of the gear toward the front of the car again. Once this was done I was able to drive full speed again without flapping. In the future I will load the bag first with everything I can and only put gear inside my car if it won''t fit in the bag. It seemed the more filled the bag was the better it worked at speed. On our return portion I stuffed the bag out with blankets and towels which seemed to work well to prevent flapping.

It rained for about eight hours on our 1400 mile trip. No rain penetrated to the inside of the bag during that time. The zipper has a rain flap but the entire bag also folds down around the edges to add another layer of protection for the zippers. Unfortunately this is where I had durability issues with the bag I received. The welding holding the Velcro on did not hold up and came off completely on each end, it also began coming off on the middle piece as well. I''ve included a photo to show the issue. I will be returning the bag because of this and will not be exchanging it for another due to this and the leaking issue mentions before.

We stopped halfway to sleep overnight and we were able to take the entire bag off the car, load it onto a luggage cart, and take it into our room without unpacking it. This was great as we had some concerns about the security of the bag at an overnight stop. Once we were at the beach we were able to remove the bag, fold it and store it in the trunk of the Prius. No need to drive around the entire week with a hard shell turtle on top of the car.

Served our need; placement on cars with no roof racks may be important for noise control

This rooftop carrier was ordered because our car, Camry, does not have roof racks, and we needed to haul quite a bit more than the trunk of the car holds. Our trip was 750 miles one way, 2 days long and through heavy rain one of the days. Nothing in the carrier was wet, or even damp. There was no sign of any leakage. We followed the instructions carefully to prevent leakage from happening. The carrier is larger than expected; more than ample for our need so we filled it with some lightweight things to help make it full as was recommended by the manufacturer. We purchased the rubber mat as well to protect the roof and aid in non slippage of the carrier. Our advice is based on one way trip only and in hopes we feel much differently on the return trip. I think we placed the mat and carrier too far forward on the roof. I wanted to be able to see at least a couple inches of the carrier through the sun roof window. Possibly a bad mistake as the wind lifted the 2 inches of the mat that exceeded the carrier’s front edge (zippered side was facing the rear as instructions indicated) and slapped it constantly against the roof and window. It was deafening, so we stopped after 10 miles and cut off about 4 inches of the mat. That helped for a while but the wind also lifted the front end of the carrier and made a howling sound. We upped the volume of the radio and accepted the noise given we were in a driving rain storm. The carrier was too heavy to take off to readjust during our overnight stay, so the next day I eventually stopped the car when the front of the carrier lifted high enough to expose more of the mat causing slapping and wind howling as strong as the day before. I opened the sunroof and from the inside and we ripped off as much of the mat as we could. We finished the trip with just the howling wind sound. We tightened the straps every time we stopped, but never were the straps in need of more than a tug. On our return we will put very heavy items at the front of the carrier and place what’s left of the mat and the carrier much further back on the roof but with no part of the mat extending beyond or near the front or sides of the carrier. If that does not work to mitigate the wind tunnel sound and slapping noise, I will update this review. Otherwise, it’s a sturdy carrier that holds a lot. Our initial concern that there was no lock on the carrier for safety protection at our overnight accommodation was quickly dismissed after realizing that the zipper wasn’t easily slid open so a quick heist was not likely; or if someone had the desire to lift off the carrier as heavy as it was, then maybe they needed the contents more than us; or we might see the carrier tossed aside on the highway within a few miles if they had the same slapping and howling experience.

This has now been on two trips, each about 800 miles round trip. We LOVE it! It is absolutely shocking how much it holds! I''m able to easily fit a large 27-gallon bin, two standard Samsonite carryon suitcases, a couple of smaller weekender-type bags, and several throw blankets, beach towels, and pillows.

We bought this for road trips (primarily camping and to Southern California from Phoenix area). We have two kids still in car seats and a medium-sized dog. The primary reason we wanted something like this is that we drive two different SUVs fairly equally. This makes way more sense than a pricey investment into a fixed roof rack setup for just one vehicle. Although we CAN fit everything in, we would prefer to have a little more space inside.

One of our vehicles has roof rails, one doesn''t. Installation is an absolute breeze both ways and the storage bag stays nicely secured. Whenever we travel with it, we''re traveling on AZ and CA highways anywhere from 65-85 mph, so we do experience some minor sliding back, but we just make some adjustments at routine stops.

I noticed some people said they were concerned with the lack of security on this. Our thoughts are that we won''t be leaving this unattended, and in reality, anyone could jimmy a locking box open also. Another drawback people noted was jot being able to easily access things on the fly. That''s true, but if you use this strictly for transporting, it''s a non-issue. Have your important belongings in the vehicle, including a change of clothes and toiletry bag for longer trips.

A couple of things to mention:

    - It should be obvious, but the instructions don''t mention this at all - you need to tie off the strap ends once the roof rack is totally set in place. At high speeds, I imagine they could loosen from the buckles easily and quickly. We tie a double knot in the 3nds as close to the buckle as possible, then tuck the tails under to minimize wind noise. The straps should be TIGHT, so this should not be an easy task.

    - As some others mentioned, don''t bother with this unless you''re going to pack it pretty full. It seems like it would be pretty inefficient if it wasn''t! The black and yellow 27-gallon bins from Costco and Home Depot fit PERFECTLY sideways and fill the bag really nicely.

    - We did notice in the extreme AZ summer heat that the bag got kind of weird and soft, almost like the early stages of literally melting. It almost molded itself to the vehicle roof and was near impossible to slide even a centimeter. I would not recommend leaving this on your vehicle in extreme weather for any longer than you need it.

    - I''d recommend laying it on the ground and packing it before you actually ibstall it on your vehicle. Knowing how things will fit and being able to arrange before that step is a huge help - it won''t be easy once it''s on your car!

Finally, it cleans up well after trips and stores amazingly compact. We don''t know how we went so long with this carrier and have already recommended it to friends!

I bought this to replace our old hard shell carrier. It arrived in its retail box with lots of images for reference. If you read the instructions and reviews you will find it easier to set up the first time. Not that its hard. After zipping it up make sure the flaps are folded over the zippers and are attached to the velcro to keep out the water. I took this on our 1800 mile trip to the beach loaded with luggage. We experienced occasional noise from the wind blowing over the loose carrier fabric. At a rest stop I tucked it in around the straps and it stopped. It rained overnight at our first stop and then we drove through driving rain for about 3 hours. When we arrived everything was dry as a bone. I like that it folds up into a storage bag and I didn''t have to drive around with an empty car top carrier on the roof for a week.

I purchased this carrier instead of a rigid roof-top carrier for two reasons: price and ability to collapse for storage when not in use.

I found this to be an outstanding product - and I purchased a refurbished unit for a significant discount. In fact, my expectations were vastly exceeded during my first - and so far, only, use of it - during a cross-country move from the DC area to Southern California.

The bag held up perfectly during four days of travel on the roof of my car, two of which included heavy, constant rain. Everything stayed dry, which surprised me. It is constructed of waterproof PVC on the front, top and rear, but the non-PVC sides and zippers also kept out the water.

For some perspective of what I was able to pack in it: two 18-gallon plastic tubs at the rear, two copier paper boxes in the middle, one full military duffel bag at the front, with some pillows in the middle on top of the copier paper boxes.

My only complaint about the bag is that there was initially a loud flapping sound at highway speed. I should mention that I believe this was probably caused by the underlying non-slip pad that protects the car roof from scratches flapping. I had to jury-rig a solution by rolling up a couple towels and stuffing it under the front of the bag and re-strapping it down very firmly, but it held up fine and was noise-free for over 2500 miles. The pad was also Rightline Gear-branded, and I used a cable lock from them, as well. I was a bit concerned that having it lashed only to side rails on my car wouldn''t be sufficient, but again, everything was fine and it didn''t budge. The Sport 2 fit my VW Sportwagen, and I recommend you do some measuring of your roof width prior to purchase.

I really can''t recommend this bag enough, as it was very cost effective and provided a great solution to a one-time need. I''m really glad I didn''t go for a rigid roof box.

Don’t waste your money, get a hitch and hitch mounted storage bag. Also it reduced my mileage down 10 mpg by the end of the trip. The constant worry of it flying off the roof again and not being able to see it at night was super stressful. The black doesn’t help either, a white material would reflect heat and save contents for getting baked. This design is terrible, why not make the front side more aerodynamic. Oh and after it flew off I had to re-install it upside down. In short don’t buy!!!

We have a Volvo XC90 and purchased the Sport 2 size. It held 1 very large suitcase, 2 carry-on size suitcases, a stroller frame, and a few small bags. We used 2 straps that came with the carrier and 1 additional strap between the two included straps.
I suggest packing it very full because any space that is empty may cause some flapping in the material.
Our round trip was just over 1K miles through mountains, rain, and very hot summer weather. The carrier itself is still in great condition. No tears, holes, or issues. It held up great!
On the way to our destination we didn''t pack it quite as full as we should have and heard some flapping half way through our trip. We learned our lesson and packed it very full on the way back and didn''t hear any sound at all.
I found a quick video online the demo''s how to attach the carrier to the car and that was all I needed. Very simple!
I would recommend this product to anyone needing additional car space for a trip, but don''t want to take up all the space at home with a hard case.

I took the Rightline Gear Sport Jr. on a month long, 8,600 mile (13,840 km) trip across Canada and the US and it performed admirably. It was a great fit on my Toyota Corolla 2006 WITHOUT a roof rack (the next size up would have probably fit too, but this was more room than we needed). There were some epic rainstorms along the way and I can say that this bag is completely waterproof. Not a single drop of water got into the bag (the car on the other hand, I will explain below). The material is pretty heavy duty; I drove at normal speeds and just about every day would drag it off the roof, fully packed, slamming onto the ground. I made sure to only load it with large bags and had the same layout every time to speed things up. The front of the bag gets pretty littered with bugs after a while, but the rains washed most of it off by the time my trip was over. I didn''t have a roof rack and was using the bag on the naked roof. I would wipe down the roof with a rag every time and I put down a non-slip mat. I didn''t get the official non-slip mat which has terrible reviews. I went to a Dollarama and picked up a non-slip mat roll for less than $5 and it worked perfectly (I know because pulling the bag off the roof every time was fairly difficult with the mat on). The bag always felt secure and was still strong at the end of the trip. There are a few issues: the straps that come with the bag are WORTHLESS. You will notice in my included photos that I have straps purchased separately. Definitely head down to the hardware store and pick up some quality ratcheting straps for $20 or so. I also got 4 carabiners to use instead of the attached plastic loops which were too small, although, I don''t think they were necessary. Tying the bag down tightly was probably good enough. It you want to risk using the included straps, please make a trial run before going on your actual trip to make sure it''s enough for you. I was hoping the use the car clips but there was nowhere in my car to attach the clips. If you''re thinking of using the car clips, run your fingers along the car door frame to see if there''s somewhere the clips can latch onto (you don''t want it latching onto the weather stripping). And speaking of weather stripping, even with the upgraded straps, if you''re using it on a naked roof, it will affect your weather stripping. It was fine in light rain, but in heavy monsoons water would leek in pretty rapidly. Have a towel handy to shield your arm and pets when that happens. Another issue the straps against the weather stripping did also let in more wind noise and would vibrate pretty loudly if tightened just right, but was bearable. Even with the issue with the straps, I can''t deny that this bag survived the entire road trip unscathed. It protected my gear and kept it perfectly dry. I''m definitely keeping this bag to use again on a future trip and I can thoroughly recommend it.

Purchased the Sport Jr version for an Elantra GT. Used a few times for camping trips and was very pleased with the performance. Thanks to this bag we can easily go on weekend camping trips with a baby and two large dogs...in an Elantra... On the first trip it rained heavily on our drive there and all of the items in the bag were completely dry when we arrived. Was very pleased with the waterproof aspect of this bag. The 4 straps hold it down securely but the metal clips that hook to the car door frame do increase the wind noise in the car slightly since they affect the seal. Not a major issue as it is not too loud and you get used to the difference quickly. You do have to tighten the straps very well or there will be vibration and noise from them. On my first trip out I had to stop a couple of times to adjust them but had no issues after that. I did purchase the under-pad which I find helpful. It adds a little extra padding to protect the roof which I like. Tips: - put the bag on the roof before loading it. It is easier than lifting a full bag into place and less likely to damage the roof. - distribute the weight well and load softer items on the bottom to protect the roof. - wipe the roof and the bottom of the bag before putting the bag on the roof. Any sand/dirt will act like sand paper if trapped between the two - If using the metal clips on the door frame, tighten one side as much as you can and do not touch it after you tighten the other side. going back and forth between the straps makes it harder to tighten fully and will cause vibration/noise. - the bag has a shape designed to be aerodynamic. Try to fill it in a way that maintains that shape. This will help the noise and fuel economy.

Ok i should giving this a five star but decided not because of what happened to us on our way to camping. We have a toyota corolla 2011 me and my hubby been looking for extra storage for our car for our camping trip and buying this one is the easiet and cheapest way. We don''t have to buy a car rack for the roof of our car and it has a good review. The bag itself works great 100% water proof we can prove that because this thanks giving long weekend we went to our camping trip and on our way to Bon echo provincial park the rain was so heavy i was so worried that our things on the top of our car will gonna get wet specially we fully pack it and can''t even closed the velcro but when we reached our destination the things inside our bag was all so dry. Now here''s the catch the clip that included don''t work with our car or maybe we don''t put it right (hope you have video in youtube showing how to put it properly) anyways the "tie through the car" worked with us and the problem started there because of the rain, the strap get wet and the water get through the car too so all of us beside the door get wet. I hope the company can suggest something that we can do to prevent water going inside the car through the strap. Thank God on our way home it''s already sunny or else we will all end up sick because the temperature goes down and it''s really kinda cold. About the noise of the car we heard it too but we realized it''s because of the non skid pad that we also buy my husban just fold it in and the noise was gone so just cut it a bit smaller from the bag size and also tigth the strap to prevent the noise too. Will i recommend it??? I did 2 of my friend buy it already but gave them a head up regarding the water through the strap when it rains.
